Trail’s Poor No More anti-poverty group and the United Church’s Life Long Learning Committee invite you to attend an evening event with BC MLA and anti-poverty advocate, Jagrup Brar on Tuesday April 10 from 5 to 8:30pm in the Trail United Church.
As you may remember, in January of this year, Mr. Brar accepted a challenge put forward by the BC “Raise the Rates Committee” to live for a month on the $610 a month allowance granted to single persons receiving social assistance. The experience profoundly affected him and he says that he has a much deeper understanding of the multiple impacts on those who are living on an income so far below the poverty line.
We are delighted that, while coming to the West Kootenay area in his capacity as the Small Business Opposition Critic, MLA Jagrup Brar has been able to make time to meet with citizens in the Greater Trail area who are not only concerned about poverty , but also want to bring about some positive changes.
The evening will start at 5pm with introductions and reflections on poverty. We will serve a simple, no-cost meal & then Jagrup will speak about his experience of accepting the “welfare challenge”. He will also put forward some proposals with respect to what the BC government could take to reduce poverty in this province. There will be time for questions, comments & input from those attending, followed by a short process of gathering ideas for what people & organizations in the Greater Trail area can do to help reduce poverty levels locally.
